What To Do When "Loving Your Body" Is Hard | Guest Post

I'm really excited today because a super super cool blogger is doing a guest post! She is always talking about being body positive and self love and she is just so inspiring to me. Today she has written up an awesome article about What To Do When "Loving Your Body" Is Hard, which I think is something we can all relate to. :)

Over 80% of women in America want to lose weight. We live in a culture fixated on looks, size, and constantly aspiring to be a smaller size. If you’ve ever struggled to love your body, you’re not alone, and it’s not your fault. From a young age we are fed lies about what “healthy” looks like. It’s incredibly difficult to shed years and years of myths that have been ruthlessly drilled in our heads.

So, what is diet culture?
Diet culture is the idea that :
  • Being skinny is the healthiest way to live
  • You need to lose weight if you don’t fit into society’s ideal look of a woman/man
  • Having “fat” is bad and means you are unhealthy
  • There is an ideal attractive body shape (ex. Slim thick)

If you want more information about diet culture be sure to check out my YouTube video all about it!

We see evidence of diet culture everywhere. Such as magazine having one body type, advertisements for weight loss, and the non-stop pressure to conform to a certain size. “Slim Thick” is the latest body “ideal” shape that has been pushed.

Diet culture pushes a cycle onto people that goes like this :

It’s safe to say that the diet industry profits off of making young women feel insecure.
On “Unearth My Roar”, it’s all about empowerment. Dieting promotes restriction, which is the OPPOSITE of uplifting. Here are my TOP THREE TIPS to feeling amazingly confident. Because, you’re worth it.

  1. What defines someone’s worth?
Think of three people you admire. And go through these line of questions.
  • What do you find admirable about ______?
  • Is it their body or their achievements/attributes?

For example, you could use Ellen, Oprah, Michelle Obama, or any other icons.
These people have become memorable because of who they are, and what they have done. Their body and looks do not define them. Even when you meet someone for the first time, your impression is based off of how their personality and nothing to do their weight.
So, your WORTH comes from the inside. And, your personality’s pretty dope.

2. Increase the body diversity into your life.
We are constantly only seeing one type of body. Thin & Tall. To break the cycle, we should expose ourselves to more than one body type. It shows that we come in all shapes & sizes and that’s something to embrace. If you’re interested, check out my Instagram to get more inspiration for starting on this journey of self love, and more recommendations for body-posi bloggers.

3. Taco bout it…
Yes! Talk about it over tacos, or pizza, or WHENEVER. Taco Tuesday, anybody? Seriously, talking about it is the first step to healing.

“There is nothing more powerful than vulnerability.”

If you think you’re alone, I promise you aren’t. Seek out a trustworthy friend, or a family member, or even a school counselor. Just be honest about your struggles and it will lift the weight off of you. Also, my DMs are always open. Sometimes you just need to have someone to listen. What step are you going to take today to love yourself?
